Youth Employment Partnership

Every year about 800 young people benefit from comprehensive training opportunities and employment experiences through the Youth Employment Partnership (YEP) which began in Oakland almost 30 years ago as a summer job program for youth. Today, it is the largest youth employment agency in the Bay Area.
YEP trainees are an ethnically and culturally diverse group of youth ages 14 to 24. Most are from families with few financial resources so the household income pays for immediate expenses. To address this type of financial situation, YEP is incorporating Job Training to Asset Generation (JTAG) in its training programs. JTAG presents financial skills workshops that cover topics such as:
- Banking
- Credit
- Entrepreneurship
- Investing
- Housing
JTAG encourages young people to think for the long-term when making decisions about what to do with their money. In 2003, YEP launched a new Individual Development Account (IDA) for JTAG participants. Twenty young people took financial literacy classes, and opened IDA accounts at a local bank. Fifteen participants completed the entire program, and with the match from the IDA program, students were able to invest in ways to enhance their future, such as buying a used vehicle or saving for higher education.
Merrill Lynch funding supports the inclusion of JTAG in YEP programs to give young people a head-start on saving for their future.
"In our almost three decades of job training, we've seen the importance of financial literacy for low-income young people. YEP's partnership with Merrill Lynch and local businesses will allow our youth to apply this knowledge as they begin earning money and managing their assets."
