Combining traditional classroom instruction and innovative computer technology, PUENTE (People United to Enrich the Neighborhood Through Education) Learning Center provides educational opportunities for approximately 2,800 children, youth, and adults each day in the low-income communities of East and South Los Angeles.
PUENTE's tuition-free after-school enrichment and high school tutorial programs currently serve 390 students, ages 6-18. These programs have a successful track record of providing:
- Supplemental educational instruction in core academic subjects
- Homework completion assistance
- Computer literacy and SAT and college preparation assistance to the primarily Latino and African-American students in its service areas
In 2003, 199 students participated in the PUENTE Learning Center Financial Literacy Program, a program that educates students on money, banking, budgets, free enterprise, credit, and debt. One-hundred thirty-five students were from grades K through 6; grades 7 through 12 included 44 students. The remaining 20 students were limited English-speaking youth. PUENTE tailored lesson plans to concentrate on saving, budgeting and consumer issues, and broadened their language skills to include numerical and financial vocabulary.
Merrill Lynch supports the addition of a money matters curriculum to PUENTE's existing programs in East and South Los Angeles..
