The mission of Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) is to create a "college-bound culture" for students—and their families—who live in the low-income communities of San Fernando, Pacoima, Sylmar and Arleta. This is a tall order for neighborhoods where many residents' annual income averages $15,000 and most families receive federal assistance.
But Project GRAD is delivering results through its comprehensive program. It builds confidence and self-discipline in students while nurturing their commitment to learning, discovery and independent thinking - qualities that motivate them to pursue higher education.
The Merrill Lynch "Investing Pays Off" Finance Academy is just one building block of Project GRAD. It aims to improve how youngsters plan for their educational and financial futures. The Academy offers bilingual workshops for students and their families to:
- Develop skills in financial planning, money management and investing
- Explore a variety of business careers
- Receive mentoring in finance, business and economics
College-bound students ages 15-18 who complete the program and meet Project GRAD requirements receive four-year scholarships of up to $6,000 annually. In 2003, 115 students from San Fernando High School attended and completed the Academy.
Merrill Lynch funding supports the Finance Academy, a two-day workshop that introduces high school students and their families to the world of finance and investments.
"Project GRAD Los Angeles is thrilled to partner with Merrill Lynch in serving the students and families in the Northeast San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. Merrill Lynch's financial literacy programs are giving high school students the tools to succeed in school and in life. We commend Merrill Lynch for its important work in the community and its leadership in providing financial education to families."
