The Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) seeks to build a stronger, more economically stable community by helping youth gain skills needed to guide their families and communities out of poverty.
A majority of participants in OCPICA programs comes from low-income families with no high school education and sometimes even little elementary school level education.
With Merrill Lynch support, OCAPICA launched the New Economics for Teens program, emphasizing the skills needed for jobs that pay a living wage and developing links with local businesses that expand community employment opportunities. New Economics for Teens programming helps youngsters learn about a wide range of personal finance topics such as:
- Planning and managing personal finances
- Establishing and maintaining credit
- Budgeting and investing
- Saving for college
- Becoming an entrepreneur
In 2003, 20 youngsters from across Orange County participated in OCAPICA's summer Financial Literacy Leadership Program (FLLP). During the eight-week program, students received in-depth training to help them become money smart and business savvy using Merrill Lynch's Investing Pays Off® curriculum. Lesson plans were enhanced by guest lectures and field trips to local businesses, including fellow IPO partner and student-managed Food From The 'Hood.
Merrill Lynch funding supports the development, program, launch and delivery of the New Economics for Teens financial literacy program.
"The impact of IPO on our low-income Asian and Pacific Islander youth will be significant. They will gain new skills so they can help their families out of poverty."
