Since its inception in 1994, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) of Northern California has taught thousands of students the basics of starting and operating a small business. NFTE supports entrepreneurship education for low-income youngster ages 14 to 18 by helping them improve their academic, business and life skills. The program creates new opportunities for disadvantaged youth by fostering their self-esteem and by making it possible for them to:
- Understand the value of learning
- Gain the confidence to take sensible risks
- Feel empowered to take control of their lives
Merrill Lynch funding supports NFTE Merrill Lynch Youth Entrepreneurship Academies (YEA), made possible through strategic partnerships with Arriba Juntos and the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center, organizations serving Hispanic and African-American youth. The 36-week academies present entrepreneurship, life-skills and business incubation segments drawing from classroom, experiential and computer-based curricula.
In addition, NFTE brought its entrepreneurial program to 114 students ages 6 to 12, through collaborations with IPO partners BUILD, Community Youth Center (CYC-SF), and Girls Inc. of Alameda in 2003.
Merrill Lynch funding supports the expansion of NFTE programs to youth in communities with high concentrations of low-income, at-risk teens.
"Merrill Lynch's support enables NFTE to partner with other IPO recipients to offer tailored, meaningful entrepreneurship programs for low-income youth. In facilitating effective partnerships such as these, Merrill Lynch not only empowers Bay Area youth, but fosters effective collaboration and best practices sharing between nonprofit organizations, facilitating long-term, sustainable social change."
