Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club

Dollars & Sense is a popular after-school program open to youngsters between the ages of 10 and 18 in San Mateo. The program, which is offered at the Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club (MPBGC), features two interrelated components:

  • Twelve class sessions concentrate on saving, investing, credit, financial goal-setting, job-related financial decisions and other money management skills
  • Dollars & Sense opens a savings account for each youngster who then makes a weekly contribution that is matched by the program at the end of the school year

Dollars & Sense advances the mission of the MPBGC to inspire and enable young people to become responsible, productive and caring citizens. Since its founding in 1955, the organization has focused on serving youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds. The nominal membership fee makes the Club a popular destination for the more than one thousand kids of diverse ethnicity who have joined. In fact, about 120 kids visit the Club daily to enjoy the varied programs.

Dollars & Sense participants learn from hands-on activities, guest presentations, Internet research, educational workshops, field trips and more. Through the support of Merrill Lynch, Dollars & Sense reached 100 students from low-income neighborhoods of San Mateo in 2003. In collaboration with IPOŽ Partner BizWorld, the Club has also expanded its financial skills learning to younger audiences through participation in the BizWorld friendship bracelet simulation.

Merrill Lynch volunteers continue to support MPBGC through their work as guest speakers on topics including investment strategies, the value of education, and the stock market. MPBGC is producing impressive test results-92% of Dollars & Sense and 86% of BizWorld module participants demonstrate increased pre- and post-test scores.

Merrill Lynch supports the expansion of MPBGC's Dollars & Sense program to low-income neighborhoods of San Mateo.

"The Dollars & Sense financial planning program is vital to teaching teenagers the basics of money management."
