Junior Achievement of San Diego and Imperial Counties

Junior Achievement believes that motivating youth to stay in school and teaching them the essential skills to navigate our free enterprise system will prepare them to become self-reliant and financially successful individuals- individuals whose lives will make a difference to the entire San Diego community.

The Logan Heights neighborhood of mainly Hispanic, African-American and Indochinese students faces complex challenges. Their schools number among the city's poorest. Many kids are from immigrant families and have language barriers. The dropout rate at one high school exceeds 50 percent and three-quarters of the students perform below level on standardized tests. Few businesses and shops are located in Logan Heights and youth unemployment is 40 percent.

Junior Achievement is helping to change this picture with the introduction of the Logan Heights Initiative. The program brings K-6 grade students age-appropriate instruction on how to achieve lives of personal and financial independence. The curriculum focuses on business, entrepreneurship, workforce skills, career options, and how a community works. The Logan Heights Initiative:

  • Motivates students to stay in school by presenting hands-on activities
  • Recruits and trains community members to facilitate classroom activities, share their own personal experiences and serve as role models
  • Gives Merrill Lynch employees the opportunity to volunteer in classrooms

In 2003, Junior Achievement San Diego reached nearly 30,000 students (up from 14,500 four years ago).

Merrill Lynch funding supports the Logan Heights Initiative, making it possible for Junior Achievement of San Diego to offer a foundation in financial education to more than one thousand low-income K-6 grade students.

"Junior Achievement is the dynamic bridge between business and education. It gives kids the edge to succeed beyond their dreams."
- Kathy Gamez, Junior Achievement Board Member
