Junior Achievement Personal Finance is an innovative online program that teaches middle school and high school students how to make informed financial decisions. The program integrates Internet-based activities with an age-appropriate curriculum that covers budgeting, saving and investing, credit and spending, and money and risk management.
Volunteers play key roles in the program, visiting classrooms to:
- Introduce students to the Personal Finance program
- Present special lessons in collaboration with teachers
- Expand the curriculum by sharing actual business experiences
- Serve as mentors and role models for at-risk students
The program uses best-practices teaching strategies that allow youngsters to demonstrate their proficiencies as they go through the Personal Finance module. A core focus is on learning how to make sound financial decisions to reach personal goals.
With Merrill Lynch funding, Junior Achievement brought its Personal Finance program to 14,400 K-12 grade students across Southern California in 2003. In addition, collaborations with IPO partners BizWorld and Orange County Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (OCAPICA) has expanded the program's reach beyond Junior Achievement's target audience.
Merrill Lynch funding supports the expansion of Junior Achievement's Personal Finance to thousands of under-served students in eight Southern California counties.
"I believe Junior Achievement is more than a training ground for business. It's a training ground for life."
- Erasmo Perez, Junior Achievement student
