Junior Achievement of the Bay Area

During the 2000-01 school term, some 70 high school students from across Oakland took part in the Junior Achievement Elementary School Program. The students taught over 1,150 kids in grades K-5 the basic building blocks for financial and career success, using a curriculum that emphasizes children's role in the world as individuals, consumers and employees. The kids also developed team skills, learned how to evaluate business and social issues and make informed decisions.

Junior Achievement's Elementary School Program offers multiple benefits to the communities it reaches:

  • High school students increase their economic and financial knowledge, improve their communications skills, and enhance their self-image as they teach younger children
  • Elementary school students learn the fundamentals of making financial, career and other life decisions, discover how the subjects of English, math and social studies connect to the real world
  • Schools enjoy increased volunteerism, an enriched curriculum and better attendance

What's more, the high school volunteers receive leadership training and high school credit for their work. During the next year, it is anticipated that 150 high school students will volunteer to teach approximately 1,750 elementary school students.

Merrill Lynch funding supports expansion of Junior Achievement's Elementary School Program to train additional high school volunteers and provide program materials for under-served students in the San Francisco Bay Area.

"By providing mentors and role models to students in the Bay Area, Junior Achievement is making a tremendous impact on the lives of young people. I salute all the participants in Junior Achievement for their dedication to helping the youth of California maximize their potential and achieve excellence."
-Gray Davis, Former Governor, State of California
