Girls Incorporated of Orange County

Economic Literacy, a Girls Incorporated Program, introduces girls ages 6 through 18 to the world of financial literacy, including money management and investment strategies.

Through age-appropriate offerings, including She's on the Money (ages 6-8); Dollars, Sense and Me (ages 9-11); Equal Earners, Savvy Spenders (ages 12-14); Futures and Options (ages 15-18), girls gain the skills and confidence to make the right decisions about their financial futures. Participants learn how to:

  • Budget and save
  • Take informed financial risks
  • Overcome feelings of intimidation about money

Since 2002, Merrill Lynch funding has enabled Girls Incorporated to reach over 600 girls throughout Orange County, increasing the number of girls served by 66%. Merrill Lynch volunteers have also contributed their time and expertise, speaking to girls about the importance of being financially independent, hosting field trips and providing ongoing support to improve program effectiveness.

Pre/post tests indicate that Girls Incorporated is meeting its goal of establishing a foundation of fiscal responsibility for every girl. Over 85% of the Economic Literacy participants can identify a career goal for themselves and understand the importance of becoming financially literate individuals.

Merrill Lynch funding supports Girl Incorporated's Economic Literacy program, and the goal of establishing a foundation of fiscal responsibility for every girl.

"I've learned through the support of Girls Incorporated that I can do anything, accomplish anything, and be everything I've ever imagined-if I work hard for it."
- Nancy Alvarez, Age 17
