Since 1970, the Community Youth Center-San Francisco (CYC-SF) has been helping at-risk young people and their families in Chinatown cope with complex issues such as family conflict over acculturation, economic hardship, school difficulties, drug use and gang membership. The organization offers over a dozen programs today including: a 24/7 hotline for youngsters in crisis; a comprehensive counseling program focused on gang activity and juvenile delinquency; an employment component that gives young people concrete alternatives to delinquent activity; and a citywide youth employment program dedicated to providing teenagers with job-readiness training and employment experiences.
Merrill Lynch funding supports Investing Intelligence for Youth (IIFY). This program helps youngsters from the ages of 14 to 18 build a solid base of financial education through a variety of activities including:
- Interactive workshops
- One-on-one tutoring
- Finance-related games
During the school year of 2003-2004, the IIFY program served 85 students from a variety of backgrounds (Asian, American, Latino, and African-American) at San Francisco Community Alternative School and Newcomer High School. Students participated in money management and college information sessions and gained hands-on training by playing the Stock Market Game. The IIYF program fulfills social/economic/math credits at Community Alternative, and ESL program requirements at Newcomer High Schools. In collaboration with IPO partner, The National Foundation of Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), IIYF participants also have the opportunity to explore and create business ideas of their choice. Additionally, three students this year were awarded a scholarship to attend the week-long NFTE business camp at Stanford University.

"CYC and Merrill Lynch will bridge the gap in personal financial education by empowering young people with practical knowledge and skills. Our project is based on the principle that personal finance is a key in the development of young people and has the capacity to improve their lives."
