For over 30 years, Centro Cultural de la Raza has dedicated itself to creating, promoting and preserving Mexican, Chicano and indigenous arts. Located in San Diego's Balboa Park, Centro Cultural offers diverse cultural programming including literary presentations, visual arts exhibitions, and film and video screenings, emphasizing traditional Latino forms of dance, theater, storytelling and more.
With the support of Merrill Lynch, the Centro launched Community Outreach: Students Motivating Others to Succeed (CO:SMOS). This innovative initiative enlists young actors ages 7 to12 to teach other students the fundamentals of finance and money management through the theater arts. Student actors in this one-of-a-kind program benefit by:
- Gaining first-hand experience with the creative and business challenges of theater
- Taking responsibility for writing, acting in, and budgeting their own productions.
- Conveying financial knowledge to audiences made up of their peers, including family and other community members
Script writing focuses on families, differences in household finances, savings techniques, and running a theater group as a business entity. Weekly classroom sessions focusing on budgeting, fundraising, marketing and production reinforce the business side of theater productions.
Teatro CO:SMOS works with students from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, including first year immigrants. In 2003, the group performed their original production, "A Time for Hope," for San Diego area educational institutions, presented financial literacy monologues, and produced "From Miserable to Wonderful," a full length stage production. Teatro CO:SMOS is also producing the video phase of "Investment in Self Equals Investment in Your Future," a promotional campaign which aims to expand the group's audience and increase revenue.
Merrill Lynch supports the Community Outreach: Students Motivating Others to Succeed (CO:SMOS)initiative which helps youth learn the fundamentals of finance and money management through theater arts.
"Theater is a captivating teacher, creating change with passion and inspiration. The Centro Cultural de la Raza and Merrill Lynch are combining the arts and financial literacy in this inventive public-private venture."
