California Council on Economic Education

The Three Little Pigs, The Tortilla Factory, and other children's classics have enchanted generations of kids. Now these stories are the centerpiece of some innovative activities and lessons in the Choices and Changes program of the California Council on Economic Education in San Bernardino County. Specifically, children's literature is being used with kids from second through fourth grade to develop the knowledge and reasoning skills that will allow them to take responsibility for their futures, in addition to understanding that human behavior is a result of choices, not chance. Specifically, students learn about:

  • Decision making
  • Working, goods, and service
  • Using and improving human capital
  • Buying and selling in the economy

Parents and community business-owners are involved firsthand in the work of Choices and Changes. They assist youngsters in explorations of finance, human resources, production and other topics.

Merrill Lynch's support for Choices and Changes focuses on training second grade through fourth grade teachers at Crestmore Elementary School in San Bernardino, where 79% of the population is of Hispanic origin. The county has a large concentration of under-served racial and ethnic populations in addition to a high poverty rate. In 2003, the program trained seventeen teachers, reaching over 600 students.

"Choices and Changes gives children vital information and decision-making skills early in their lives, before they decide to stay in school or drop out. Once children learn critical life skills and realize their power as the most valuable resource this country has, they can start to build a realistic path to their futures."
