Academy of Business Leadership

Over one thousand inner-city high school students in Southern California have completed the Summer Business Institute (SBI). Developed by the Academy of Business Leadership (ABL), a widely respected business-education partnership, SBI brings at-risk students to local college campuses where they participate in classes and gain hands-on experiences in business, entrepreneurship and finance.

SBI engages volunteers from companies such as Merrill Lynch to help teenagers discover and develop career-focused business skills. The summer session focuses on a variety of activities that include:

  • Creating business plans for a start-up company
  • Managing a fictitious stock portfolio
  • Visiting major corporations
  • Daily guest speakers

Now the top 20 percent of SBI graduates have the opportunity to take part in Building Outstanding Leaders Today (BOLT). The ABL Merrill Lynch BOLT Program deepens the students' exposure to the business world through a 10-month program offering pre-college business courses, internships, mentoring and participation in an advanced stock market competition. In 2003, Merrill Lynch funding enabled 226 students, ages 11 to 21, to participate in the SBI and BOLT programs, representing 80 middle and high schools in Southern California.

SBI delivers impressive results. Since its launch in 1992, nearly every participant has graduated from high school. And almost 80 percent of the graduates continue their education at elite institutions of higher education across America. In 2003, SBI successfully recruited and graduated 19 students from IPO® partner organizations, including Project GRAD and Food from the 'Hood.

Funding supports expansion of the Merrill Lynch BOLT program and the launch of a business incubator to expand ABL's reach.

"Merrill Lynch is paving the way for ABL's national expansion. Now we can provide this unique opportunity to every student who needs it. The possibilities are endless through our joint collaboration."
